PRIMARY BEDROOM REFRESH

One project that I was really excited about working on this year was refreshing our primary bedroom. This room didn’t need any renovation (thank, goodness) but I was really craving a change. When it came to furnishing our home, mine and my husband’s bedroom came last. Pretty much every piece in this room, I brought with me when I got married. I remember buying the bed while I was living with my brother out of college and I specifically picked the headboard in this charcoal color over the cream I was really wanting because I was eager to get engaged and thought Chris would like this one better when we moved in together. In fact, while I lived with my brother, I did do a bedroom refresh of my own and purchased a Hemnes dresser and two small nightstands from Ikea.

before:

With no room for my dresser in our new room, we moved it to the nursery, along with one of the nightstands (the other we relocated to the guest room at the time). Opting for a small dresser as our nightstands was definitely the right decision. They, along with the bed, filled up the wall nicely and gave us the storage we needed. Though we have 3 closets in this room… yes THREE closets…it’s still nice to have some drawers for things like underwear, socks and pajamas.

Our bedroom definitely needed a rug to feel more cozy and my husband was insistent on jute. It wouldn’t have been my first choice but I went along with it to make him happy as I pretty much had final say on the rest of the house. Well, I hated this thing…sure it looked okay, but it was the most uncomfortable rug you’ve ever laid your feet on and you cannot imagine the dirt it collected. I would vacuum every week and my canister would be completely filled with dust and dirt like it all came with the rug because there was no way it was from us.

So, when it came to planning out our projects for 2023, I wanted our primary bedroom to be top of the list. We were just replacing furniture so I knew it couldn’t be too hard. I got to work mocking up a design and shopping for furniture and decor. I was excited to partner with a few different brands for this project and was delighted to receive our curtains, mattress, bedding, pillows and new rug from them. (more on those below)

For our bed, Chris and I discussed upgrading from our Queen to a King sized bed. I was a bit hesitant. While the extra space would be nice, it would also cost more for the frame itself and we’d also need a new mattress, bedding, king-sized pillows, etc. One good thing was that I already had a king sized duvet and cover. A tip of mine has always been to size up your duvet to allow it to hang longer on the sides of the bed. My husband is also a pilot so a lot of the time, I’m the only one in the bed. Do I really need all that space to myself most of the week? After going back and forth we ultimately decided to upgrade. And guess what? I’m so glad we did and I’ll never go back. What everyone says is true. It really is the best.

Our mattress is actually from Amazon. I partnered with Novilla and received their Gel Memory Foam Mattress to try out. I was definitely hesitant to order a mattress online for the first time but I will say that we are pleased! While it did take about a month for my body to get fully used to our new mattress, now I sleep so well. It’s a medium firm mattress and perhaps just a tad softer than what we were used to so I would wake with some back pain for a few weeks but that has since subsided. Even though the gel memory foam is supposed to be cooling, I also found I was sweating a lot in the night but a cooling mattress pad did the trick.

A new king sized bed meant that we needed new king sized sleeping pillows and for those I partnered with Royal Therapy and tried out their Gel Microfiber Hotel Pillows and it truly does feel like you’re sleeping at a five-star hotel. My husband and I do typically prefer more of a memory foam pillow so sometimes we will switch between these and our previous pillows but I will say I mostly do sleep on these new pillows from Royal Therapy.

For bedding, I chose these luxurious sheets and duvet cover from Ela Lane. I already had their bedding on my Queen and love the sateen collection specifically so much that I just had to have them in a King size. Ela Lane was so kind to send them to me for my bedroom refresh project.

When picking out a frame, I wanted to stick to the transitional style I love so much. I remember seeing this canopy bed online and fell in love with it but we have tray ceilings so a canopy wouldn’t work well in our room, especially since I refuse to give up the ceiling fan. My luck changed when I realized they carried another version of this bed without the canopy! I was sold. I love the bronze detailing to this bed and the fabric headboard and footboard. It’s exactly what I pictured.

Like mentioned above, our jute rug had to go. I partnered with Miss Amara who so kindly gifted me this area rug for our bedroom. I went with a 9 x 12″ to fit our new king bed well and I just love the pattern and think it completely changed the look of our room.

When thinking about window treatments, I was excited to shop for something that would really elevate our space. Our previous curtains, I actually brought with me from my first apartment out of college. I only had two panels but we have smaller windows so when we first moved in, they worked for the time being. Our new curtains are gifted from Curtarra. I love the neutral beige color and the pinch pleated style. We also opted for black-out and it’s definitely helped us get more sleep, especially for those days Chris needs to sleep when it’s light out. Couldn’t be happier with them!

Lastly, I want to talk about our lamps to complete our bedroom refresh. Our previous lamps I had bought when living with my brother and I have been wanting to change them for so many years but lamps can be pricey! Ultimately I went with this style from Kirkland’s. They are the lamps that I included in my mood board and I just could not stop thinking about them for months so I went ahead and bought them recently. I just love the pleated lampshade and the darker base makes for a great accent on our nightstands.

I would love to know what you think of our primary bedroom refresh so feel free to leave a comment below! I have linked specific products throughout the post but you can also shop everything right here: https://liketk.it/44HN1
